The Epiphone Royal is a fairly rare model in the history of the Epiphone archtop with only approximately 225 made between 1931 and 1934.  The model was considered an auditorium sized guitar with a lower bout of 15 1/2 inches. This example bears the serial number 7013, but actually appears to be one of a subset of guitars which were inadvertantly given a 7 as the first digit instead of the intended 6, making the number this one should have received 6013. One major difference that backs this historically is the hardware used.  The tailpiece is a prime example.  The wraparound tailpiece appears to have stopped being used sometime in 1933.  There are also other guitars close to this one in production that have the same error in serialization.

This Royal is made with a carved, graduated spruce top of remarkably tight grain, among the closest growth rings I've seen on an archtop guitar.  The back and sides are mahogany.  The neck is 3 ply and made of what appears to be mahogany with a maple center strip.  The fretboard is rosewood, as is the bridge.  All of the hardware appears original to the guitar, including tailpiece, tuners, and bridge.  The finish also appears original and the guitar appears completely free of cracks or breaks, a great testament to the build quality and care taken of this instrument that is over 90 years old.  Much of the finish has been worn off of the back of the neck from many years of play.  There are scattered scratches and small dents in the wood of the body, along with some areas of finish wear, as to be expected with a guitar of this age.

The guitar plays beautifully, even with the action set quite low for an acoustic guitar.  The guitar has a classic dry, punchy archtop tone.  The frets are typical vintage style and in excellent condition with lots of life left in them.  The neck has a very comfortable modern C-shape.
