This 1935 Epiphone Masterbilt Triumph comes from the last year of the 16 3/8 inch body for the model, before being upsized to 17 3/8 inches in 1936. The guitar features a parallel-braced carved Adirondack spruce top with solid carved flamed maple back and solid maple sides. The neck is 5-ply, primarily mahogany with two maple strips surrounding a mahogany center. The neck is topped with a Brazilian rosewood fretboard and has a very soft V-shaped carve.
The guitar has a loud, punchy voice, typical of 16-inch Epiphone archtops. The tone is fairly dry and crisp with fast response. The playability is wonderful and easy. The frets are in great condition and level, yielding clear notes at all frets. The neck angle is great, allowing for the bridge to have ample room for adjustment either up or down as the player prefers.
The guitar features 5 original clipped end Grover tuners and one replacement tuner. The small ratio tuners adjust quickly, but hold tune well. The bridge and tailpiece are later replacements. The finish shows ample checking and most of the original finish has been worn off of the neck. The guitar shows a light layer of protective lacquer overspray, and there is a cleated crack at the upper end of the bass side f-hole. The back and sides are free of cracks. The neck has one small dent in the center, as pictured.
