When the L-4 model was repositioned to be a 16-inch, f-hole archtop, it became the last prewar Gibson archtop to carry on all of the basic features of the original L-5 excepting the maple neck that was replaced with mahogany and rosewood fretboard instead of ebony. These maintained features include the carved spruce top with parallel braces, solid carved maple back, solid maple sides, 16-inch lower bout, and 24 3/4 inch scale. For all intents and purposes this period of L-4 is the exact same guitar as the L-7 that immediately preceded it, right down to the Nick Lucas inlays.
This example is in all original condition, except for an apparent refret. The bridge, pickguard, tailpiece, tuners, and truss rod cover all appear original. It also comes with a period correct redline Geib case which is presumably original since these cases have very significant value on their own.
The structural condition is sound with no cracks and tightly fitting braces. The finish is in very good, all original condition with light checking. The finish is worn through on part of the back of the neck, as shown in photos.
The playability is excellent with all notes ringing out clearly at all frets. The action can be set quite low if desired without any issues, allowing for easy fretting. The neck has the usual V-shaped carve of mid-1930s Gibsons.
