This 1937 Epiphone Deluxe is in beautiful condition, sporting the desireable, early Epiphone "side part" headstock and the relatively shortly lived fan fingerboard inlays which were later replaced with the similar appearing cloud inlays. The maple of the neck, back, and sides are all heavily flamed.

It presents with a very old refinish and more recent complete binding replacement of the neck and body.  The binding replacement was expertly done by a San Francisco bay area luthier who also blended the fresh lacquer on the binding with the preexisting finish beautifully so that it is essentially undetectable.  There are also two expertly repaired, cleated  cracks in the Adirondack spruce top that were presumably done at the time of the refinish, as they are completely undetectable from the exterior of the guitar, and can only be spotted upon inspection of the interior of the top. The flamed maple back and sides are free of any defects or repairs.

The pickguard, bridge, and tuners are all original spec for the guitar.  The tailpiece is not original, but is still an early, patent pending Epiphone Frequensator piece with the correct gold finish. The frets were replaced at some point.  They have lots of life in them and they are level.  Combined with the nice straight neck which has a normal amount of natural relief in it, the guitar plays with ease, as currently set up to maximize acoustic tone.  The neck has a very soft V-profile carve which becomes somewhat closer to a C-shape as one moves higher up the neck.  All in all, it makes for a very comfortable playing experience.

The guitar is capable of classic prewar jazz, punchy comping, but is not as brash as some early Epiphones, having some more tonal complexity than many of them.
