What caught our eye first was the 4A figured maple back on this Triumph. This is the wood that was usually reserved for the Deluxe and the Emperor. While we've seen a few Triumphs with highly figured maple, they are quite rare. As beautiful as it is, what really stands out is that fantastic Epiphone archtop tone. This guitar has beautiful singing tone and endless headroom. 1930s and 1940s Epiphones almost always have a lot of power and that cut that can make it through the sound of a band and the best of them also have a tone that can stand up to the best solo archtops. This is one of those full package examples.

The 5-ply neck has a comfortable, slightly V-shaped neck near the headstock which becomes a full, C-shaped carve toward the middle of the neck. The frets appear to be original. While they show some wear, they have significant life left in them, and the guitar plays very well.

The body is in excellent condition with no cracks. The top is made of fine grade Adirondack spruce with amazing response. It shows a small amount of finish damage from the original pickguard degrading. The original finish is present with a protective overspray of lacquer. The tuners and bridge are original. The bridge was modified at some point with bone inserts. I was a bit skeptical, but these inserts work very well. The Frequensator tailpiece is a later replacement with a nice added tortoise overlay added to it. The pickguard is also a replacement.
