Introduced in 1938 as a smaller, more affordable electric guitar the original ES-100 featured a Charlie Christian style rail pickup with a solid, white, rectangular bobbin as opposed to the hexagonal black, white-bound version seen on the ES-150.  Functionally these pickups are the same, just with differing cosmetics. While the ES-150 was basically an x-braced, electrified version of the L-50 acoustic archtop, the ES-100 was the same, but based instead on the L-30 with an x-braced version of its 14.25 inch lower bout body.

This example is features original tuners, pickup, pots, side-mounted jacks, control knobs, and tailpiece. The bridge is a circa 1960s Gibson, two-footed, rosewood version. The guitar plays wonderfully with low action.  The bridge features room to adjust either up or down as the player prefers. The neck has the usual V-shaped carve associated with many Gibson guitars of this period.  Plugged in the guitar delivers the classic tones heard on early jazz recordings by Charlie Christian and Oscar Moore.  It sounds better than most of the ES-150s I've played with a nice, quiet circuit for an early, single-coil pickup.  There is typical finish wear and some small cracks in the spruce top around the pickup bobbin hole which appear stable.  The braces are all tight and the full arch to the top is preserved completely intact.
