The Gibson L-4C was introduced in 1949, in many ways the acoustic, solid-carved spruce top, acoustic counterpart to the ES-175, introduced in the same year, with which it shares its bodily dimensions and appointments.  This example shipped two years later in 1951 as 1 of 201 in sunburst that year, its largest production year ever by a fair margin.

This example has been remarkably well maintained over the last 75 years. There are only a few small, scattered finish chips and scratches, as shown in the photos.  The neck finish is almost flawless, except for the one small chip shown on the bass side right next to the binding. The remaining finish is glossy with hardly any checking at all.  The hardware is all in excellent condition with the only real defect being a slight bend to the tuning key for the G string, as is often seen in guitars from this era.  The tuner work perfectly.

The guitar is a wonderful player with a full, C-shaped carve that is the perfect medium size.  The frets are in excellent condition with very little wear.  All notes ring out clearly at all frets.  The guitar projects beautifully, particularly for a 16" archtop with a Florentine cutaway.
