This 1953 Gibson L5C is absolutely one of the finest sounding cutaway 17-inch Gibson archtops we've ever had the pleasure to play. That makes it a stand out among many really great guitars. On top of that it plays beautifully with a perfect neck angle and plenty of room to adjust the action either up or down as the player prefers. The tone of this guitar is full and even across all registers with plenty of dynamic range.
The finish shows checking all over, as to be expected with a guitar of this vintage. It appears all original with no signs of overspray. A thorough inspection of the interior with an endoscope and the exterior with a black light confirms that the guitar is completely free of cracks and repairs. The braces are all in place and the top appears stable with no signs of sinking. The tailpiece, tuners, and pickguard (including bracket) appear all original. The bridge is a later Gibson ebony one. The hardshell case is a Geib which appears era correct, although I have never before seen a Gibson archtop of this era with a blue liner. That said it could very well be original to the guitar. The case is in excellent condition with all working latches and hinges.
