We are excited to get another Gibson L-5C from the golden age of post-war Gibson archtops, and this one lives up to the reputation. The thinly carved top on this one lends to its fast reacting top with massive headroom. I believe this L-5C is probably capable of the more volume than any other we have had, and I believe rivals a 1947 Epiphone Broadway we had a few years ago for sheer projection. The tone is high mid-focused with huge amounts of cut/punch.
The guitar shows scattered scratches and a few very small dents. There is some mild finish damage underneath the pickguard from off-gassing of the original, but the original finish is otherwise remarkably free of checking. External and endoscopic examination of the guitar confirms that it is free of cracks. The edge of the walnut stringer in the three piece neck can be lightly felt which is normal, but is noted for those who are bothered by feeling something like this. The frets appear original with original binding nibs intact. The guitar has the original tailpiece and a period correct 1950s Gibson bridge. The tuners are fairly new replacements and we just had a new pickguard installed. At some point an endpin jack was installed and its wire is still present on the inside of the guitar and would make it easy to install a new floating pickup. There is also screw hole in the bass side of the fretboard extension from prior mounting of a floating pickup, as pictured.
Weight - 6.0 pounds
Nut width - 1.65 inches
1st fret depth - 0.90 inches
10th fret depth - 1.00 inches
Scale length - 25.5 inches
The guitar comes with a vintage Lifton case that may well be original to the guitar. The case covering fabric is partially torn away. The hinges are in good shape, but only two of the latches work. Otherwise, the case is structurally sound.
