This 1958 Gibson L-4CN is one of just 34 shipped by Gibson that year. The carved spruce top of this example is remarkable for prominent silking and some striking bear claw figuring. The finish is in remarkably great condition with very few acquired defects for a guitar of this age. The heel of the neck features a stinger which is occasionally seen on guitars of this era.
The playability is wonderful with great action. Notes ring out clearly at all frets. The guitar has a great acoustic voice which isn't always the case with these L-4Cs, many of which are pretty quiet. That's not the case with this one. The neck has a comfortable C-shape which is full, but not oversized.
The all original finish is in beautiful condition throughout with minimal dents or scratches. There is some lacquer checking, particularly in the lower bout with one prominent crack in the lacquer which is discolored. There are no cracks in the wood. Underneath the pickguard is a small area of finish burn from offgassing caused by a celluloid strip on the underside of the original pickguard. The pickguard was replaced at some point, as a result of the issues with the original. The tuners have also been replaced, which is common for this era due to breakdown of the original tuner buttons. The bridge and tailpiece appear original.
The guitar comes with the orignal brown/pink Lifton case which is in very good, fully functional condition.
