This excellent guitar is a bit of an enigma. The body is that of a Super 400 with a Florentine cutaway, typical of the Super 400CES of 1965, but not of the acoustic version of the model which continued to typically have the Venetian cutaway. I see no internal evidence of the cutaway being added later with all of the side kerfing appearing consistent throughout. It appears to have been made with the Florentine cutaway from the start. The neck has a full 1 11/16" nut width, rather than the skinny nut width that would be typical of 1965. Additionally, the headstock overlay is consistent with circa 1980.  It also appears to have had Schaller tuners at one time which would be consistent with that era. This brings up a strong possibility that the guitar was renecked by Gibson around that time. It's hard to say why this was done.  The original neck may have been broken, or it may have just been to replace the original skinny neck that is less popular. The guitar has also clearly been professionally refinished.  It may have all been done at the same time, but there are no records of the work.
 
The tailpiece appears original.  The Schaller tuners were replaced with Kluson Sealfast tuners which would be consistent with those on the original neck. The ebony bridge base appears to be an original part, but the saddle is an ebony non-Gibson replacement.  The modified pickguard is made of the original celluloid material.  The dual pickups are original Gibson Johnny Smith humbuckers, and the control knobs are vintage with the expected top dimple and bright glow under a black light.
 
With all of that noted, the guitar plays beautifully and the sound is exceptional. It excels as an acoustic instrument, and the sound plugged in is incredible. It nails the Johnny Smith tone wonderfully. The neck has a C-shaped carve that is very comfortable.  The frets appear to have been replaced fairly recently and are in excellent condition with minimal play wear. All notes ring out clearly at all frets. The action can be raised or lowered at the bridge as the player desires.
