This L-5CN is one of only three shipped in 1968. The top is made of fine-grained spruce with remarkable silking. Tops like this aren't seen very often. The neck is 5-ply made of heavily flamed maple and walnut stringers. The back is a single piece of lightly figured maple. The fretboard is a beautiful slab of ebony.
The guitar plays wonderfully with a great feeling C-shaped neck which is completely straight. The frets are in great shape with lots of life left in them. The acoustic sound is balanced and full. The Gibson Johnny Smith pickup which appears from the same era sounds just fantastic. It is wired to an endpin jack.
The overall condition is excellent. There is an added strap button in the heel. The tuners and tailpiece appear original. The pickguard is a replacement, as is it's mounting arm. The bridge saddle appears original, but the base appears to be a very well made replacement which is fitted to the guitar perfectly. The finish only shows a few scattered blemishes, including some slight pitting of the lacquer near the bass side of the bridge, a minor surface scuff on the back of the heel, a very shallow impresstion in the top on the bass side, a few chips on the back of the headstock, and a couple of small lacquer checks on the side.
