This 1991 Gibson ES-165 is from the first year of production of this model which was the Herb Ellis signature model. The guitar was modeled roughly after his 1953 Gibson ES-175 (which resides here at That Rhythm Man Guitars), marking the return of the 16", Florentine cutaway, single humbucker, laminated body archtop for the first time since 1971 when the ES-175 with a single neck pickup was discontinued.

It is in all original condition, other than the addition of a strap button at the heel of the neck.  The electronics are untouched with the original Gibson 490R pickup. The finish is in glossy condition with extensive, but light checking.  There are a couple of small finish chips on the heel, shown in a closeup photo. The gold finish is in excellent condition on the hardware with some wear shown on the tune-o-matic bridge.  There is room to adjust the bridge either up or down as the player prefers.

The guitar is wonderful to play with a straight neck and frets that are in excellent condition.  The action is low and fast.  All notes ring out clearly at all frets.  The neck has a rounded C-shaped carve that feels very comfortable.  The electronics are work perfectly and the pickup delivers great tone.
