Of all of the L-5 CT examples we added to our inventory this week we wanted to save this rarest of all for last. This parallel braced example has the classic carved spruce top and carved flamed maple back in a thinline form the guitar is known for, but instead of humbuckers, this one is loaded with two P90s. So many classic recordings of the 1940s through and into the 1960s were done with P90 loaded archtops and this guitar absolutely captures that magic.
The guitar presents in near mint condition with only the very lightest of minimal surface scratches on the back and an almost flawless top finish. There is also a little light wear to the gold plating on some of the hardware. The frets show a litlle light wear on the first three frets, but wear is almost unnoticeable higher up on the neck.
The playability is great with fast action over the C-shaped neck. The bridge has plenty of room for adjustment either up or down as the player prefers. The walnut stringers between the maple portions of the neck can be very lightly felt, but do not affect playability or the finish in any negative way.
The electronics all work perfectly and the P90s sound crisp and clear. The presence of dual pickups adds a lot of diversity to this stunning archtop. I also find that the somewhat thinner body results in far less tendency to feedback than a full thickness L-5, making these CTs far easier to manage on stage.
