This 2001 Gibson Custom Shop L-5CT is one of the less commonly seen acoustic versions of the thinline L-5 and comes with an X-braced carved spruce top. This one comes equipped with a floating DeArmond Rhythm Chief 1100 Reissue attached by a neck mount. The pickup is controlled by Schatten thumbwheel potentiometers mounted under the pickguard for a seamless look. The guitar is also fitted with an endpin jack which is by far and away my personal favorite way for an archtop to have a jack installed. It makes it out of the way and very secure with no risk of damage from a pulled cord.
The guitar plays like an absolute dream with fairly low action for an acoustic guitar while still maintaining great acoustic volume. The guitar also has great acoustic tone, and really doesn't seem to give up anything to its deeper bodied siblings. The neck is a comfortable C-shape. The DeArmond sounds great, as they always do. With this pickup one ends up with an incredibly versatile guitar. The great acoustic tone is there with enough volume for a small setting, and great electric tone with less risk of feedback than a deep bodied archtop would typically have. Of course, there is the added comfort for those who find a full depth guitar uncomfortable to play.
The frets are in great shape with lots of life left. They do have some wear showing on the first three frets, but otherwise wear is almost unnoticeable. The finish looks great, but does show some light surface scratches, and a few dents in the top upper bout on the treble side, as well as a couple of lighter ones on the bass side, as shown in the closeup pic. The gold finish is mostly gone from the tailpiece.
