This stunning example of Michael Lewis's work was completed in 2002 and other than some slight darkening of the lacquer and some light scratches on the pickguard, it looks almost exactly like it would have 23 years ago coming off of Lewis's bench. The attention to detail and the stability of the woods and his work over the years is truly remarkable.
The guitar is made with absolutely stunning woods throughout. The body has a 16-inch lower bout. The x-braced spruce top shows wonderful silking. The maple back and sides are all 4A flamed maple. The neck has a classic barber-pole flame figuring that is very similar to that seen on some original John D'Angelico built guitars. The fingerboard is dark, rich ebony. The binding work is flawless with beautiful work around the f-holes and meticulous multi-ply work around the body and headstock. Make sure to check out the highly detailed engraving of the tailpiece and incredible binding work on the pickguard also.
The guitar plays beautifully with a beefy, C-shaped neck. The frets are in excellent condition. The acoustic sound is fairly mid-range focused for an x-braced top, giving a tone that seems somewhat between a fairly typical x-braced guitar and a parallel-braced one. The Bartolini floating pickup is wired through under the pickguard Schatten wheel controls and into an endpin jack. The electric tone is excellent also.
