We love having the Wes Montgomery signature edition of the electric L-5 in stock. Too bad for us, they often don't stick around long enough. This is a beautiful example from the James Hutchins oversight era of the Gibson Custom archtop builds, well known as a period for restoring the great reputation of Gibson carved top archtops. The wood available during this period was also known to be extremely good, and this L-5 Wes shows it with the heavily flamed back typical of the "Hutch" era.
The guitar plays beautifully with low, fast action and a comfortable C-shaped neck. The frets show fairly light wear with lots of life left in them. The bridge has plenty of room to adjust either up or down as the player prefers. The original 57 Classic pickup is such a tough pickup to try to beat in a WesMo. They just match stunningly well with them. The sound is just iconic and this guitar has it.
There is some light wear to the gold on the hardware. The finish shows very little wear, but there is a bit of delamination of the clear coat on the treble side of the neck and a small amount on the bass side near the neck joint, as shown in photos. I don't really notice it when playing, but those very sensitive to a slight variation in texture should be aware.
