This 2010 Comins Classic has a 16-inch lower bout width and is loaded with a single neck position pickup which was custom wound by Bill Comins himself. Bill also refinished this guitar with a black top, replacing the original all natural finish after repairing a top crack. Following this repair the guitar has remained structurally stable. Upgrades from the standard Comins Classic model in addition to the custom wound pickup include a European spruce top, koa binding, and split block fingerboard inlays.
The guitar is a great player with great action and wonderfully level frets that show very little signs of wear. The neck has a comfortable C-shape. All notes ring out clearly at all frets. The custom pickup sounds amazing through a clean Fender amp. It's not at all difficult to dial in tones reminiscent of Wes Montgomery.
The top finish shows light surface scratches and swirls, as well as a couple of spots of internal lacquer cracks that can only be seen when viewed at just the right angle in relation to the light. These are all things that are always a bit easier to find with black finishes, but do not detract at all from the beauty of this guitar. The top and back both have a few scattered 1-2 mm dents. Woods include a European spruce top, flamed maple back and sides, 5-ply flamed maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, and koa binding.
