This Collings SoCo is made with a solid mahogany top, rather than the more common solid maple or laminate maple of the model. This feature gives the guitar a warmer sound with a softer attack that really sounds great for jazz or blues, giving this semi-hollow guitar a sound much more like the sound many try to achieve with archtops than one would expect. Don't let that fool you into thinking it's a one trick pony though. Switch to the bridge pickup and this mahogany bodied guitar with Lollar P90s can move you into Les Paul Junior territory in a flash. It's just a super versatile instrument that sounds truly great at both ends of this spectrum.
The playability is superb, as expected with a Collings. The action is low and fast with all notes ringing clearly. The neck has a comfortable C-shape. The frets are in great condition with only light wear, mostly present on the first three frets where there is a small amount of flattening under the highest strings. Otherwise, wear is almost undetectable.
The finish is in great condition with only the lightest of a few surface scratches in the clear coat and a few 1 mm light impressions in the back. All in all, it is in excellent condition.
