This is a near mint example of a rare variation of the L-5 CES made with a single Charlie Christian pickup in place of humbuckers by what was at the time the premier segment of the Gibson Custom Shop, known as "Crimson Custom". We have had a Super 400 CES variation as well, and while it was an excellent guitar, we think this one is even better. It more closely approaches the sound of an original ES-150 or ES-250 from the 1930s, and it plays even better.
It is made with all top rated woods, spruce top, highly flamed maple back and sides, and a 5 piece neck made of two walnut strips sandwiched between three pieces of highly flamed maple. The guitar is very resonant with a wonderful woody tone. The neck is perfectly straight, allowing for low, fast action. All notes ring out clearly without buzzing.
The guitar is in almost perfect condition with only some very light surface scratches which could easily be buffed out, should the new owner wish to do so. If closely inspecting, one of the walnut strips in the neck can be felt very slightly. I don't notice it at all when playing, but feel that it should be pointed out. There is only minimal, essentially undetectable wear of the frets. Other than those minor things, the guitar appears as it left the factory.
The guitar comes with the original hard shell case, the Crimson Custom certificate of authenticity, inspection card, an engraved truss rod cover with the original owner's name, and the factory issue standard L-5 truss rod cover.
