Now here's an L-5 that's a rare find, made even more rare by the fact that it's a prototype. The acoustic L-5 was the early standard for jazz band guitars, and the cutaway version introduced in 1939 was designated as "Premier", also known as the L-5P. The acoustic version of the L-5 has rarely been produced outside of custom orders for decades. As this one is designated Prototype 2, there seems to have been at least two prototypes made by the Gibson Crimson Custom Shop in 2014. This was followed by a small run of production examples that year.
This example is a beautiful playing guitar with excellent action and a comfortable C-shaped neck. The frets show a small amount of wear in the first three, but wear is almost undetectable otherwise. The bridge has plenty of room for adjustment as the player desires.
The guitar has a parallel braced spruce top and classic punchy acoustic tone to match. The BJB is a classic complimentary floating pickup with great electric tone. The pickup has a single volume control mounted on the pickguard, and is accessed through an endpin jack.
The finish is in near mint condition with only very light surface scratches, and few of those. The pickguard also shows light scratches and the ABR-1 bridge shows some of the gold finish worn away.
