The Gibson Custom L9 hollowbody guitar was made as a limited run meant to fall in between two guitars that Gibson was famous for making, the Les Paul and the L-5 CES by combining features of each but leaning hard in the direction of a Les Paul. The guitar features a mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard like a Les Paul. It also has the same trapezoid inlays and scale length of 24.75 inches. The body woods are also Les Paul inspired with a maple top (heavily flamed in this case) and mahogany back. Lastly, the body mounted TOM bridge and stop bar tailpiece are like one would find on a Les Paul. The L5 features include a 17-inch lower bout width and a fully hollow body with carved top and back woods, but the body depth is that of thinline model at 2 inches. The pickups are a pair of Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers.
The neck has a medium C-shaped carve and the guitar plays with incredible ease with low, buzz-free action. The sound falls somwhere between a classic semi-hollow body guitar like an ES-335 and the L-5 CES tone. It's very a versatile guitar with a great sound. The custom shop quality definitely shows.
The guitar shows aesthetic signs of playwear with some scuffing and hairline scratches in the clear coat, but nothing more than minor wear. The guitar is structurally sound with no issues. The frets show light wear, but have lots of life left in them.
