This Iwamoto LG10 was commissioned by Last Guitar in Japan as one of a series of instruments to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the shop.  Takeshi Iwamoto is a master luthier in Tokyo making finely crafted mandolins and guitars.  Iwamoto was commissioned to make this guitar in the style of a 16" Gibson L-5 and he has succeeded tremendously with this guitar.  This example doesn't have as sweet of a sound as some 16" Gibson archtops, but gives up nothing to any of them in power.  I occasionally comes across archtops that have virtually limitless headroom, and this is one of those.  The harder you hit the strings, the more it punches back.  This is one of those that lives up to the often used term "cannon". 
 
The construction is solid with parallel bracing similar to a 1920s L-5. The woods used are beautiful and of extremely high quality.  The Red-Engleman hybrid spruce shows prominent medullary rays and the German maple back shows beautiful flame figuring.  The neck is 3-ply maple-ebony-maple.  The fretboard and headstock overlay are ebony, as is the bridge.  The original tuners a $500 set of engraved, gold Waverlys.
 
The guitar has been played quite a bit in its few short years, doing time as a gigging instrument.  The frets are still in excellent condition with lots of life left.  They appear to be of Jescar Gold fretwire which has a much longer lifespan than typical nickel alloy frets.  The finish shows wear from play, but no signs of any abuse.  There are surface scratches and some scattered small dings.  Two small holes are present on each side of the headstock extension where a pickup had been mounted and a small segment of binding is missing at the site of one of these holes.
 
The guitar comes with a hardshell case that is in very good condition.
