Tom Doyle is well-known for working with Les Paul for about 45 years as his luthier, guitar-tech and engineer. In addition to his impeccable work as a luthier he in collaboration with Les Paul has created a number of well-respected pickups. This guitar was built by Tom in about 2006 and features a custom made 7-string blade humbucker pickup set in the neck position only.
The guitar is a great player and was made with premium woods throughout. The neck is made with three layers of flamed maple with two intervening stringers which appear to be mahogany, all topped with a rosewood fretboard. The body is ash with a heavily quilted maple top. The custom pickup sounds fantastic. The circuit appears interesting. There is a two-way toggle switch which is presumably a toggle switch inside the control cavity. There is also a small coil mounted on top of the volume pot. I haven't tried to follow the circuit to try and figure out what these things do for sure. The coil may be a dummy coil to reduce hum when in single coil mode, but I honestly don't know. It all seems on target for someone who worked extensively with Les Paul though for sure.
The guitar is in overall excellent structural and cosmetic condition with only light surface scratches and one very light dent in the back of the body (as pictured). Otherwise, there is just a small area of uneven finish on the body next to the fretboard.
